Exit Sign: A Rock Opera” follows the adventures of a father and his daughter as they travel through experiences of time, mortality, death and love while navigating extreme and unexpected turns along the way. Merging humor, irony, and kick-ass ensemble vocals, Exit Sign celebrates both the greatness and absurdity of our humanity. While casually watching TV our father and daughter are suddenly summoned by an
intriguing force from within their own television screen. They have been chosen to find the ever elusive and proverbial “IT” and bring “IT” back to save human kind from the perils of itself. Their travels take an unforseen turn when the father dies, taking a solo detour at the exit sign. The journey continues as they find ways to deal with this severe and sudden change in plans as it transforms them both in surprising ways.
A note from above ground:
Exit Sign was inspired by the death of my father in March of 2006. My intent in creating Exit Sign is to create a ceremony, a ritual, and a way to honor a relationship and a life. Through this created "story" and the power of music I hope to find a space where we can celebrate life in all of its absurdity as well as acknowledge the pain of loss. Grieving is such a private process, and at times, it has seemed crazy to me to make my grief so public. Yet I believe that bringing these feelings to light is important for all of us, because loss is something we all share.
With more than my heart can hold I dedicate this show to the memory and love of my father Arthur Baum. I hope that my search for truth in our story can somehow help other people in their own experience of grieving and healing. I feel grateful to have the support and dedication of such an amazing cast of collaborators. Their time, talent, ideas and energies have been integral in the
creation of this show. Although Exit Sign deals with death, it was born of my desire to live life honestly. As was my father, I am an optimist. Now I carry that for us both, not tirelessly but
sincerely.
Thank you so much!
with love,

Carrie Baum
